Chihuahua’s are the smallest recognized dog breed and yet they often pack the most attitude.  The little dogs are ideal for people who don’t have that much space at home and since they’re very smart, they’re easy to train.  As diminutive as they appear, Chihuahuas can be quite aggressive and are usually protective of their owners.

Bill and Dawn Slater know what it’s like to share their home and hearts with a Chihuahua.  They are the proud parents of Coco, a little Chihuahua that made history back in 2011. It all started when the couple noticed that Coco was pregnant.  Although the animal lovers already had a couple of cats and a Collie Terrier, they were more than happy to add even more fur babies to their animal family.

When the Slaters brought Coco to the vet for a routine checkup, they also wanted to make sure she was okay since her belly seemed to be massively swollen.  After examining her, the vet reassured them that Coco was perfectly healthy and expecting five puppies. They brought her home and made her as comfortable as possible since she was due to give birth any day.

When the delivery day did come, they were more than ready and excited to meet the new pups.  Hours after she had first gone into labor, Coco had given birth to five puppies. When the fifth one came out, the Slaters thought she was done but then they noticed that another baby was being born! Surprised and happy at the unexpected extra puppy, they thought once again that surely this must be the last one.  But just a few moments later Coco proved them wrong and gave birth to a seventh, then an eighth, and ninth puppy!

At this point the Slaters were extremely worried about their little Coco’s health.  She was such a small dog to begin with, could her body handle such an intense labor?  The average litter size of a Chihuahua is 5 puppies and she was well past that. Even for a large breed dog, having any more than nine or ten puppies is high risk.  The ninth one she’d given birth to wasn’t doing well either, he needed to be revived after his bag had burst. While they were dealing with him, Coco delivered a tenth puppy!

Fortunately for Coco and the Slaters, the tenth one was also the last one.  They managed to revive the ninth one and it had no further issues. In fact, all 10 puppies were found to be in excellent health and although she was exhausted (who wouldn’t be), Coco survived.  She also ended up achieving a Guinness World Record for most puppies delivered by a Chihuahua when she had her 10 babies. Who knew such a tiny little dog had it in her!?
