Mom Puts a Tape Recorder In Her Kid’s Backpack.

images via – youtube.com

Mothers are fiercely protective of their children and only want the best for their little ones.  They share a deep bond with their kids and many have described it as intrinsic, in that they are connected on another level and can feel what their babies are going through and experiencing.  It’s hard to describe but the mother-child connection is inseparable and natural, if they must, they won’t hesitate to fight tooth and nail for their kids.

One such mother is Melissa Davis from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  She has two sons and one of them, 12 year old Camden, has special needs.  He had been attending the Greater Baton Rouge Hope Academy for a few months when she noticed a change in his attitude.  He seemed off in that he was more anxious and aggressive than usual. He had even started wetting the bed again, which was something he stopped doing at 3 years old.  When she asked him about what was wrong he wouldn’t tell her, but she could sense something was off and so she decided to do some investigating of her own.

She first tried going to the school and asking questions, simple ones like where Camden’s assigned seat was located, but she couldn’t get any straight answers.  School officials, including the principal and her son’s teachers, were less than accommodating and their odd reaction to her basic inquiry left her confused. Seeing no other real options, Melissa decided to place a recording device in her son’s backpack in the hopes of gaining insight as to what was going on at the school.  When he returned home she retrieved the tape and played it back.

It started off normal but quickly took a drastic turn for the worse. She could hear Camden’s teacher yelling at him because he hadn’t completed a writing assignment and when he attempted to talk the teacher mocked him.  As a child with special needs, Camden reacts differently to this sort of discipline. Angry yelling and mocking are simply not acceptable behaviors on the part of a teacher. Melissa was incensed but the tapes just got worse.

At one point the teacher and her assistant were heard making derogatory remarks about her son.  They were using foul language and cursing, and while Camden did not seem to be in the room at the time, it nevertheless crossed the line. Horrified at what she had heard  on the tapes and armed with proof she went to speak with school officials once again.  Just as they had before they dismissed her concerns so she did the only real thing she could and pulled her son out of the school immediately.  However, she was not about to give up that easily.

Concerned for the other students with special needs at the school, she decided to share the audio recordings publicly on Facebook to draw awareness to the problem.  They ended up going viral and finally the school was forced to take action. The principal released a statement saying that the teacher involved had been fired and the other one would be dismissed at the end of the semester as well.  The principal then invited Melissa to speak with her and other school officials about the matter, but this was too little too late.

Melissa had hired an attorney and threatened to file a lawsuit against the Department of Education.  In response, the school immediately fired the other teacher involved and with that Melissa felt justice had been done.  Moreover, Camden is finally getting the education he deserves. He ended up going to a new school where the teachers are better trained and equipped to deal with special needs students.

Everytime I went to my best friends house it smelled incredible. But then she showed me This Trick:

images via – youtube.com

It is wonderful to have our homes smell good, and scented candles became very popular over the last decade.  That is, until it was discovered that many of these candles and scented sprays contain really dangerous chemicals, that can cause permanent lung damage.

I, myself, have stopped using those candles that I used to love, because of the inherent health hazard they carry.  I’m always looking for natural alternatives that are chemical free, to provide a nice fresh smell in my home.  When I came upon this DIY video for creating a natural air freshener I was intrigued.

The video below is a great tutorial for how to easily, inexpensively and quickly make your own fresh and chemical-free deodorizer.  Two alternative versions are demonstrated, which differ slightly in how they release the fragrance.

For both versions, all you will need are: a MASON JAR WITH A TIN LID, HAMMER, FORK, EMPTY CANDLE CONTAINER, SCREWDRIVER, BAKING SODA AND SOME ESSENTIAL OIL.  The DIY is easy to follow, and gives you a great means to slow-release a pleasant scent into any room in your home.

Vinegar is arguably one of the most useful substances on the planet, at least when it comes to making life in your home easier, less expensive and safer! Why use nasty chemicals that cost an arm and a leg when you can use something that has been proven by time and countless mothers and grandmothers? I personally use vinegar for more things than I can count, and I have known about the wonderful liquid since before I can remember because my mom used it for literally everything. We are going to thoroughly run through some of the best little known vinegar life hacks that will make your life so much easier.

Is your drain clogged? Try pouring baking soda, followed by vinegar, down the drain and watch the magic. Something gooey sticking to your wall? Grab the vinegar and give it a squirt, then easily wipe it away.

Does your trash can smell like garbage, even when it’s empty? Soak a piece of bread in vinegar and leave it in the garbage can overnight, and voila, no more stank. It can also be used as an all-purpose cleaner: just fill up a spray bottle with one third vinegar and two thirds water.

Too many fruit flies? Fill a glass with apple cider vinegar, cover it with plastic wrap, and poke a few holes. The flies enter, but cannot escape. It can even be used to straighten clothes if an iron isn’t available. A few other uses include keeping cats off the furniture, helping cut flowers stay fresh longer, getting tough stains out of pots and pans and cleaning glasses for a smudge-free sheen. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Hopefully you find these helpful tips and tricks over the next few weeks and months.

When it comes to cleaning just about everyone loves learning new simple ways to get the same old things done. It can be fun and interesting to discover what nifty and quick solutions people have come up with to solve common problems. This video, from YouTube channel Outdoors and Gear Review highlights a helpful trick for dealing with a common and difficult problem you’re likely to encounter when tidying and cleaning your bathroom up; hard water deposits and stains.

Hard water can be a real pain in the neck and the nasty looking stains and blemishes that it leaves behind on bathroom and kitchen surfaces can be extremely hard to fully remove. The ugly spots and stains are caused by water that contains large amounts of minerals such as limestone, calcium, and magnesium.

These metals and minerals are naturally occurring, most often in areas with low water tables and mountainous regions, and water that contains them is perfectly safe to use and drink. The biggest downside to it is the crusty, whitish colored mineral deposits and stubborn stains it leaves behind. Over time these gradually build up on stuff, especially faucets and shower heads.

Many people struggle to remove these stains and often think that they need strong, harsh chemical cleaners to get rid of them effectively. However, there’s a better and more affordable way to go about cleaning a shower head with crusted on mineral build up. All you need is apple cider vinegar, a Ziploc bag, and a rubber band.

Simply pour some apple cider vinegar into the plastic bag and place it over and on the shower head. Use a rubber band to secure it in place and then leave it on overnight. Remove the baggy the following day, wipe the shower head clean, and it should be restored to its former glory!

Check out the video for more information and to see just how shiny and spotless looking it turns out. This may be the fastest, easiest, and most natural way to clean hard water stains. It requires minimal effort or exertion on your part so try it the next time you’re stuck cleaning the house!

Check out These 5 Awesome Vaseline Life Hacks Everyone Should Know:

image via – facebook.com

While you may only think of Vaseline as an integral part of your grandmother’s home remedies and go to solutions, it actually really is a product that can seemingly do it all. People use the petroleum based, gooey, slippery substance for all sorts of things. There are countless household and beauty tricks that involve it, whether it’s loosening stuff up or smearing some on minor cuts and burns to help them heal. This article and video focuses on several beauty related uses for the product that may prove useful and come in handy, and will definitely save you time and money.

If you love to paint your nails then you likely have encountered polish bottles with their tops stuck on them. It takes almost superhuman strength to loosen and get them them of when they dry on and stick like that. To prevent this, take a cotton swab and dab some Vaseline around the base of the bottle opening and on the threads where the cap twists on, now it won’t stick the next time you go to open it.

Another nail polish trick is to coat the skin around your nails with some Vaseline before painting them. This will keep the polish from sticking to your skin, cut down on the clean up, and make your paint job look all the more professional.

If you have rough, dry skin on your feet rub a little Vaseline on them before you go to bed. Slather some all over your feet, then put on a pair of socks, and wake up to smooth soft skin. For those of us with sensitive ears that act up and become sore when wearing earrings, try rubbing Vaseline on the metal stud part that goes through your ear.

By coats the earring it helps them slide through and lessens any negative reaction or sensitivity you may have. If the scent of your perfume disappears way too quickly take some Vaseline, apply a thin coat to the area where you plan to spritz it on, then spray the perfume over that area. This works great at holding the fragrance and makes it last much more longer, plus it won’t alter the perfume’s scent.

If you haven’t already, toss a small jar of the wonder product in your bag so it’s always on hand close by. Use it to touch up makeup, soften rough skin, loosen stuck tops and lids, or as a lip gloss/chap-stick stand in when you inevitably lose or misplace them.

Besides being versatile, it’s also widely available and can be found in practically any pharmacy, health, convenience or grocery store around the world. Best of all, Vaseline is relatively cheap and costs only a few dollars, with a jar of it easily lasting a year or two before running out. With Vaseline, the possibilities may just be endless!

The Next Batch of Life Hacks are some incredibly useful winter life hacks that will make your life so much easier this winter:

image via : shutterstock.com

Along with the cold weather, there are a number of special challenges that winter brings along with it, and we all have to just deal with them! Dry skin, chapped lips, stuffy noses, darkness at 4PM, winter storms, the list goes on and on. One of the most annoying things by far is clearing walkways and driveways of snow and ice. The same goes for cars, but while you can often drive through a little bit of snow, you can’t with an ice-covered windshield. Not only is it illegal to drive with an obstructed view, it’s also insanely dumb and extremely dangerous!

While defrosting the car and scraping ice off the windshield seems like a necessary evil, it doesn’t have to be. You really don’t need to wake up extra early just to stumble around in the freezing cold darkness so that you can drive to work. Instead, you can save yourself some time and energy by doing the following:

In a spray bottle container mix together 2 parts isopropyl alcohol with 1 part water and then add in 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Shake it up, spray it directly onto an icy windshield, and watch the ice literally melt away right before your very eyes!

This rubbing alcohol spray is the perfect thing to have on hand for freezing cold mornings and icy windshields. You can leave the bottle in your car and it won’t even freeze, unless it gets well under zero. That’s because the freezing point of isopropyl alcohol is -128.2 degrees Fahrenheit, so when you spray it on the ice, it doesn’t freeze up. Instead, it helps to melt the ice and keeps it from re-freezing. Since all you have to do is mist it on, it’s by far the quickest and easiest way to clear a windshield that’s coated with a thick layer of ice.

Don’t forget to check out the video to see exactly how well this works in action and be sure to pass it along to those who could use the smart tip. If it can make someone’s life a little bit easier this winter, then it’s worth it!

This is super helpful for those rough winter months.

Winter is tough. Along with the cold, dry weather comes a number of challenges that we all have to deal with. Cars need to be cleared of snow and ice and the same goes for walkways and driveways. Traveling often becomes way more difficult than usual and to top it off our health also takes a tumble for the worse.

Many of us are plagued by dry itchy skin, sore chapped lips, and stuffy noses that just won’t go away. These things quickly add up and can make it seem like winter is dragging on forever, especially when problems pop up outside on top of the health issues we may be facing.

Which is why these simple winter hacks, covered by the Millennial Moms YouTube channel, are perfect for right now. The video features some of the most clever ways to solve common winter woes and it might offer a solution to a problem you’re currently dealing with. These are some of the best hacks shown in the clip, but there are a total of fifteen, so be sure to check it out for all of the rest.

1) Winterize Boots- This trick does the job to keep feet warm and dry inside of boots that aren’t waterproof. After putting on your socks take two large plastic Ziploc bags and stick a foot in each. Grab a couple of rubber bands and slide them on over the bag to secure it in place and seal the top off around your leg. Pull on your boots and say goodbye to cold, wet feet.

2) Prevent Static Build Up In Hair- Pull a dryer sheet on over the bristles of your hair brush so that they poke through. Brush your hair as normal to eliminate the static, plus it’ll smell clean and great.

3) DIY Boot Inserts- Maintain the shape of tall boots by cutting a foam pool noodle into thirds or fourths, then stick a piece in each boot and they’ll stay upright, making them easier to organize and wear later on.

4) Stop Wipers From Freezing to a Car Windshield- Take an old pair of long cotton socks and slide them over each wiper, puling it down as far as it can go or reaches. This will prevent wipers from freezing and/or sticking to the windshield, and makes life all the more easier.

5) Organize Winter Gear- Hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, hand warmers, neck warmers and all other winter accessories can be neatly stored in one accessible place with a shoe organizer. Hang it over a door and never search for lost gloves again.

6) Windshield Treatment- This one is the best! A combination of vinegar and water works wonders at preventing frost and ice from building up on car windshields and windows. Mix the two liquids up in a spray bottle, spritz it on car windows, then wipe off with a soft cloth.

7) Boot Tray- Keep floors safe, clean, and dry by making your own boot tray. This one is much more appealing than commercially available ones and works even better. Fill a large metal cookie sheet with a layer of decorative rocks and put it near the door so that when people enter they can immediately place wet boots on the rocks. The water will drip through the rocks to the bottom and soon evaporate. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the tips covered in the clip and be sure to pass it along to those who could use these smart hacks to make their own lives easier.

These are just really helpful.

Having your car professionally detailed can easily end up being quite expensive. While it’s always nice to have a sparkling clean car, it’s even better when you can have it without spending a small fortune. Thankfully there are all sorts of cheap ways to clean your car with common items that you probably already have around the house. They can do the job just as well, if not even better, than what professional cleaners use.

These are just a few of the handy tricks covered in the accompanying video so be sure to check it out for even more:

Clean your headlights with toothpaste. Use regular toothpaste, not the gel type, to polish up car headlight lenses by rubbing it on evenly with a cloth. Move in quick circular motions to then buff it off and you should notice the grime and fogginess disappear.

Remove stubborn old bumper stickers cleanly and completely with WD-40. Simply spray the sticker with WD-40 and let it sit for a while, the sticker will absorb it, then you can peel it right off.

Remove pet fur from carpets and seats with a spray bottle, water, and a squeegee. Spray the water on the seat and then move the squeegee over the area, it will gather and lift up the hair so you can easily pick it up.

Clean air vents with small foam brushes. They can easily fit in even the smallest vents and pick up all the dirt and dust inside them.

Use coffee filters to dust your car dashboard. Unlike cloth towels and paper towels, coffee filters won’t leave behind lint or just push dust around. Instead they work great at picking up dust and you can toss a few in the glove compartment for whenever you might need one to freshen up the dash.

Get streak free windows by cleaning them with newspaper. It’s the cloths and paper towels that leave streaks when you clean your windows so don’t even bother using them. Instead, spray down the window with cleaner and wipe it off with a piece of newspaper as you normally would.

Get rid of stubborn, lingering odors by sprinkling baking soda on car seats and carpets. Let it sit for a couple of hours before vacuuming it up. The baking soda should absorb the foul odors, leaving your car smelling fresh and clean.

There are even more clean car tips covered in the video and it might just have the solution you’ve been looking for so be sure to check it out!

THIS Student Begs Her Teacher To Allow Her Dog To Come To Class! The Teacher’s Response Breaks The Internet!

images via : youtube.com

Around 200,000 years ago humans began walking the earth. Since the inception of the human race, shelter, house, communities and eventually civilizations began cropping up all over planet earth. What’s more interesting is we didn’t build and evolve all on our own we had a few loyal friends who tagged along and helped us on our human journey through history. Probably, the one species of animal the most intertwined with our own evolution is Canis Lupus Familiaris or what we call dogs!

What makes this odd alliance even stranger is that modern day dogs evolved one of man’s initial biggest threats. This mammal species is known as Canis Lupus or what most of all call wolves. Around 100,000 years ago our ancestors began populating the land mass of Eurasia. The wolf was one of the only creatures on the planet that could match us humans near the top of the food chain. How the two species interacted with their own kind was actually very similar..

The two species both hunted in groups or packs. The hunter and gatherers would work as one finely tuned machine, to seek, find and then catch their prey for survival. Wolves also hunted in hierarchal pack and would also work with coordinated strikes and precise accuracy as they sought out their prey. Our ancestors and wolves were indeed very social creatures, and used these advanced social skills in order to take down animals much larger than themselves which in turn would leave them wasting less time hunting and more time consuming energy and nutrition.

Wolves thrived at the top of the food chains for thousands of years before modern day humans ever appeared however, now that these strange bipedal hominids were encroaching on their territory they had some very serious competition on their paws. While the two species would clash head on for many years some wolves who were kicked out or ostracized from their pack noticed that if they weren’t aggressive towards a human community this could be a pretty easy way to get food and survive without having to face the world alone.

The strong and powerful wolves remained in their packs and refused to back down to the humans however, the weaker and more scavenger type of canines began to outlast and outlive their more dominant predecessors due to their new alliance with these strange 2 legged hominids. As years passed, the traits of these less aggressive and scrap grabbing Canines we’re passed down through their DNA and they began living closer and closer to our ancestors. As we provided them leftover food they in turn would help us hunt and defend our lands and communities. It was a symbiotic relationship that was just the perfect match made in heaven.

Because both species preferred living in packs, it wasn’t too difficult for these docile wolves to integrate with the human population and eventually begin living in their homes. It is thought that these animals were the first domesticated animals ever. These first wolf-dog hybrids showed up around 30,000 years ago. As time went on these wolf-dogs soon evolved into our modern day dogs. These evolutions and changes in look were drastic for some breeds and less so for others. Humans had successfully domesticated these canines for almost any purpose they needed them for..

Now that we have gone over a short history of dogs, let’s dive head first into today’s canine story. In today’s video we will be featuring a college student named Jessica Lewis who was attending college in Statesboro, Georgia. On this week a giant hurricane named Hurricane Irma was going to be rolling through her college town and she would soon have to evacuate to her parents house in Atlanta, Georgia. She just had one little problem she had to deal with before her evacuation would begin. She had one final class she had to attend which was important to her and she had her sweet pup Luna who would have to evacuate with her. Obviously she wasn’t going to leave Luna behind during the horrifying storm.

She decided to write her teacher a letter asking for permission to bring her dog with her to class even though she knew this was against school policy. Jessica figured it was worth a shot due to the impending storm and the situation she was in. She typed out a very respectful letter asking her professor if Luna the dog could come to class with her….

Watch the video below to read the full letter and her professor’s response both of which have went mega-viral:

11-Year-Old Girl Put On Her Favorite Dress For School Photo Day. But How The School Reacted Left Her Hysterical In Tears!

image via – youtube.com

Well it’s finally August which means summer is already winding down and it’s almost time for some back to school shopping. It’s hard to believe that Autumn is already right around the corner when it feels like summer just began yesterday! Parents and their children have already began flocking to stores, to pick up new pencils, pens, book covers, (trapper keepers if they still make them), binders, folders, journals, calculators and so much more. On top of all the school supplies, many will be picking up new shoes, backpacks and clothing to begin the new school year. In particular one item that is super important every year is that perfect outfit to wear for your school photo!

This brings us to today’s story which features a young 11-year-old girl named Vegas who is about to start a new school year the the Lockwood Eileen Johnson Middle School In Montana. Overall, Vegas enjoys school and is a really good student and is well liked by almost all of her peers however one day back in September she experienced a nightmare of a school day she never could’ve imagined.

In late September in schools all across the world ‘Picture Day’ arrives pretty much on the same time every year. Some kids love Picture Day while others dread it and absolutely abhor it. Whether you love it or hate it, on this day you always have to dress up a little extra, put a little more time into your hair and just look the best you possibly can so your school pictures come out as good as possible.

Vegas had recently received a gift from her sister which was a grayish dress with a floral pattern that she absolutely loved. As soon as she got the dress she knew this would be the outfit she would wear for her school picture. The dress wasn’t scandalous at all, it wasn’t short, it was very conservative and she even put on black leggings to cover her legs. Mom helped her get ready that morning and the whole family agreed she looked amazing and knew her pictures were going to come out great!

She arrived at school went to class and waited for her time to get called in for her school picture. That’s when a school employee more specifically a teachers aid took her aside and told her what she was wearing was completely inappropriate for picture day and she wouldn’t be allowed to wear this beautiful dress she got from her sister for her school photo. Vegas obviously confused couldn’t understand what was wrong with the dress and why this was happening.

The school responded that the dress showed “too much of her shoulder” which was completely petty and a ridiculous reason to ridicule her, take her aside and embarrass her in front of all the other students. After she was publicly shamed for showing “too much shoulder” they let her take the school picture in the dress, but then they called her parents and told them they had to drive to the school and bring her different clothes that were less “scandalous” for the rest of the day!

Between the public shaming, making her feel horrible about the dress she loved and overall just making a huge spectacle out of a completely innocuous thing, Vegas couldn’t take it anymore, broke down and started hysterically crying. The whole day was completely traumatizing to this innocent and sweet little girl and she just couldn’t understand why this was happening to her…

Watch the video below for the full story and let us know if you think her dress is inappropriate:

Mom’s 4 Year Old Daughter Got Home From School Hungry With a Disturbing Note In Her Lunch Box

image via – youtube.com

Well it’s that time of year again, somehow summer has ended and it’s time to get them kids back to school. This means it’s time to start picking up those backpacks, pencils, binders, books, lunch boxes and some nice fresh new clothes. Parents all around America are finally breathing a sigh of relief as the 24/7 kid patrol ends as they bring their children to the bus stop and get them on that bus to school.

Ah the sweet joys of silence inside a peaceful and soon to be clean house. Time to take a deep breath, regroup and remember what it’s like to be an adult human again. The kids are also now transitioning into their new grade, new classes, new teachers, new friends and sometimes even new schools. For many children adapting to a whole new routine, dealing with with new people and acquiescing to their new environments can take some time.

Some can quickly get comfortable, while others have a more difficult time and can experience a decent amount of stress and anxiety. Faculty at school is supposed to be trained to make the school environment feel as safe and comfortable as humanly possible, however this isn’t always the case…

This brings us to today’s story, featuring a woman named Leeza Pearson and her daughter 4-year-old daughter Natalee. One morning Leeza and Natalee were doing their usual morning routine before school. Making breakfast, picking out an outfit and packing a school lunch. On this particular day Leeza had run out of vegetables and fruits so she just decided to give Natalee a little treat and packed her up some tasty Oreos to go along with her ham and cheese sandwich and cheese strings.

She didn’t think much of it, and sent her off to the Children’s Academy in Aurora, Colorado. That afternoon mom picked up her daughter from school and something just didn’t seem right. For some reason she said to her mom she was super hungry which usually wasn’t the case.

Mom asked her how her lunch was and for some weird reason she just didn’t answer. Leeza asked her if everything was alright with her lunch and she told her it was fine but her inflection and voice made mama a bit suspicious.

When they got home mom opened Natalee’s lunch box and her eyes nearly popped out of the sockets. Her jaw hit the floor as she saw the unopened pack of Oreos and a hand written not sitting beside the Oreos. She picked up the note, with her hand trembling just a bit and began reading this strange note line by line…….

School Officer Spots Special Needs Girl Frozen In The Hall Then Falls To Her Knees As She Figures It Out

image via – youtube.com

Do you remember your favorite stuffed animal, toy, or maybe a blanket when you were a kid. No matter where you went you always had your friend with you by your side. There was no obstacle or problem that couldn’t be taken care of as long as you and your favorite toy were together.

Scary things just weren’t as scary and just having your small friend with you gave you the courage to do things you wouldn’t otherwise do as a young child out of fear. One of the main reasons kids carry a ‘special’ stuffed animal, blanket or toy is because it lowers their anxieties and fears in almost any situation they face.

This brings us to today’s story featuring a young 12-year old girl named Raquel Zuniga, she is currently in the 7th grade and goes to classes that are specifically designed for children with moderate to severe mental disabilities.

Raquel carries a special friend with her everywhere she goes. This friend is none other than everyone’s favorite frog Kermit! Raquel hangs out with Kermit the Frog all day everyday, whether she is home or at school Kermit is always right by her side.

Due to Raquel’s disability she has severe anxiety especially when she is transitioning from one place to another. This tends to flare up at school when the bell rings and it’s time to go from one class to another. On this day, Raquel was having an extremely rough time transitioning from one class to another and she froze. She couldn’t walk or get to her class and she wouldn’t say anything. She just stood in the hallways frozen clutching Kermit silently.

Multiple teachers came up to Raquel and tried to get her to unfreeze and comfort and make her feel safe in her current state and situation. None could help, Raquel stood their frozen for just about a full hour clutching on to her stuffed frog.

That’s when a special soul enters the story, school security officer Kris Morrison who spent the last 20 years as a school officer for special needs children. However, before that she was an officer Kris was a teacher for children with disabilities and instinctually somehow knew exactly what to do to help poor Raquel.

Kris spoke to Raquel in a soothing voice and then began to sing Rainbow Connection, the famous song that Kermit the Frog, ‘Raquel’s best friend’ is most known for. As Kris sang Raquel’s anxiety and fear just began melting away.

Soon after she began moving and it was as if a miracle just occurred and she unfroze! This was Raquels favorite song, so it immediately triggered her brain to relax and feel safe. Just like that, the magic of music, an amazing school security officer and Kermit the frog had saved the day!

Teacher Grabs Crying Kids Lunch and Tosses It In The Trash! Then Tells Him He Can’t Eat This At School Again!

image via – youtube.com

Childhood obesity is a huge obstacle facing kids these days.  Rates of overweight and underactive kids are skyrocketing, and many things are to blame.  From increasingly sedentary lifestyles to sugar laden, highly processed foods that are all too convenient, it’s easy to see how kids are packing on the pounds.  More exercise and forming healthy eating habits early on can help to curb obesity but it’s hard to monitor what a child’s eating when they’re at school and exposed to unhealthy meals or vending machines.

That is precisely why many schools have stepped up their efforts to ensure that kids have much better access to healthier snacks and meals.  Many have banned unhealthy snacks altogether in vending machines and are emphasizing fresher more natural options, such as fruits and vegetables, while cutting out highly processed, fatty, and sugary foods.

In Canada some schools have gone as far as to regulate what foods are allowed in packed lunches as well.  However, some places may have gone a little too far in their efforts to curb unhealthy eating habits and that has led to complaints from parents.  Several reports have noted that schools are strictly enforcing their eating codes and fining parents who fail to include the listed healthy snacks.  In effect, if a child goes to school with cookies, candy, soda, or a banned item, school officials can take it away and throw it in the trash. As a replacement, the child is given a healthy snack and the school bills the parents for it.

Such was the case in Durham, Ontario Canada where a healthy eating program had been enacted in the public schools.  One four year old boy had a slice of homemade banana bread taken away from him by his teacher who threw it in the trash. Being so young, the boy didn’t really understand what was happening and so he became confused and upset when the snack his mother had packed for him was confiscated.

His mother, Elaine Daoust, was also upset by the incident and was told by the school that because the banana bread contained chocolate chips it violated their healthy snack policy. The school did not bother to replace what they took away from her son and so all he had to eat that day was a small bag of grapes she had also packed for him.  Furthermore, she had packed the same homemade banana bread before for him and had no issues, so why was it suddenly prohibited. It’s not like she packed him a chocolate candy bar, there were just a couple of chocolate chips and it was a small slice of bread to begin with!

According to Elaine, her son had been given a chart about healthy eating habit and a note explaining the decision from his teacher.  According to a local news report on the issue, a group of about 30 other parents in the same school district claim that their children have also had food items confiscated from them.  Some of the prohibited items mentioned include granola bars, goldfish crackers, string cheese, and chocolate milk. In the majority of these instances the food in question is not inherently unhealthy or clearly banned.

In the end, the schools have seemingly been given wide discretion.  What they regard as healthy or unhealthy can change day to day and depends on the teacher.  Perhaps more important is the fact that they are not taking into consideration the parent’s choices for their children.  After all, lots of kids are picky eaters, some have allergies, others have medical conditions which severely restrict what they’re able to eat, and a parent knows and accommodates these factors.  We all want out kids to be healthy, but that shouldn’t mean taking food from a child.
